Ghibli Memecoins Soar as AI Floods the Internet with Anime Aesthetics

  • X has been flooded with Ghibli anime-styled images following an update whereby ChatGPT-4o generates such images with ease.
  • Ghibli images are associated with the art style of Studio Ghibli, known for creating popular anime films.
  • As part of this cultural trend of Ghibli images, several memecoins have launched to associate their brand with Ghibli.
  • Prominent figures such as Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, as well as the White House X account, have all posted Ghibli-styled images in recent days.

Ghibli memes have rapidly dominated the internet, in particular the X platform, following a recent update by GPT-4o on 25 March 2025, which allows for image generation. Previously ChatGPT has been largely focused on generating text, this upgrade represents a large step towards AI functionality being available for mass adoption.

Ghibli memes are now being generated by users on a large scale globally. This includes Ghibli image generation by prominent figures such as Elon Musk and Sam Altman, who showcased Ghibli anime-styled pictures of themselves.

The Ghibli memes have also become very popular amongst users of X interested in crypto, known colloquially as Crypto Twitter (CT).

CT has often generated trends based off the X posts of widely known figures such as Elon Musk. Previously Musk has generated attention towards popular memecoins which include DOGE, SHIB, and FLOKI.

Ghibli Memecoins

With Ghibli generating such popularity, a number of memecoins were quick to capitalise upon the trend. One particular Solana GHIBLI memecoin reached an all-time high market cap of US$34 million (AU$53.95 million).

Some users have experienced large profits due to Ghibli memecoins, with large percentage gains and screenshots of portfolios circulating on X. Meanwhile, other GHIBLI-based memecoins have already rugged, where users’ funds invested into Ghibli memecoins have gone to $0.

However, trends such as this tend to be short-lived in crypto and contain high elements of risk.

While screenshots of impressive gains can induce FOMO (fear of missing out), and indeed some users do make vast sums of money, the large majority of users often end up losing funds on such risky ventures.

With market conditions not currently favourable to large, sustained moves in altcoins, venturing into new memes is considered a risky undertaking.

Crypto Culture

Crypto culture, while often used to monetise trends, which can be viewed as both a positive and negative depending upon your perspective, is also quick to embrace more than just the monetary aspect of a trend.

Many CT users have embraced the Ghibli art and enjoy sharing Ghibli-styled photos of themselves on social media, with the trend having instigated a feel of community and enjoyment for many.

AI Advancements

Chat GPT has changed the way in which many people function around the world since it launched to the public in 2022. It has been integrated into both business functions and personal lives.
