Chomp Your Way Through Tokyo: Pac-Man’s 45th Birthday to be Celebrated with NFT Scavenger Hunt

  • Bandai Namco is celebrating Pac-Man’s 45th anniversary with a Tokyo-based NFT scavenger hunt in partnership with Flickplay.
  • The event, set for February 2025 in Shibuya, invites participants to find digital collectibles inspired by Pac-Man.
  • Players will need to purchase an “Experience Pass” to join the hunt and interact with their NFTs.
  • This collaboration highlights innovative uses of NFTs, blending gaming nostalgia with digital interactivity.

If you’re of a certain age demographic, you’ll remember heading to gaming arcades and playing some of the classics – asteroids, pong and so on.

But when it comes to legendary retro games, it doesn’t get much more prestigious than Pac-Man.

It’s hard to believe, but it’s been 45 years since the revered title was first released – and Bandai Namco is celebrating in style.

Scavenger Hunt to Take Place in Shibuya – Where Pac-Man First Burst onto the Scene

As if anyone needed another reason to travel to Japan, Bandai Namco is teaming up with NFT platform Flickplay to launch a Pokemon Go-esque treasure hunt around Tokyo.

The digital collectibles will come in two waves, each paying homage to Pac-Man. Those who are in Shibuya – Pac-Man’s hometown – in February 2025 will be able to participate. Players will have to scour the neighbourhood scavenging for the hidden NFTs.

If you successfully “capture” a Pac-Man collectible, you will be able to integrate it into the Flickplay platform. This allows NFT holders to treat their characters like a Tamagotchi, creating images with them and otherwise interacting with the Pac-Man collection.

“Experience Pass” Required to Participate, As Flickplay Considers Interoperability

The Founder and CEO of Flickplay, Pierina Merino, was gushing about the partnership with Bandai Namco and the exciting treasure hunt.

Although the experience has been locked in, there’s still no word on interoperability and which network Flickplay will use for the event.

We are actively scouting for great games where we could pilot deeper interoperability with our characters as a step toward introducing a broader ecosystem approach.

It’s worth noting that participation won’t be free – interested scavengers will need to buy an “Experience Pass” from Flickplay.

However, the collaboration adds another layer of interactivity to NFTs, an asset class that has been looking for ways to break back into the global market following years of fledgling interest.
