Upcoming .shib Domains – A Bullish Turn for Shiba Inu
- Shiba Inu, the second-largest meme coin by market cap, has long tried to shed its image as a crypto without utility.
- The project plans to become the Web3 world’s first DeFi ecosystem to incorporate a native domain, using the suffix .shib.
- The goal is to create greater interoperability between Web2 and Web3 platforms.
Shiba Inu. The crypto community’s favourite puppy. The fluffy, orange-tinged canine has been forever associated with crypto culture since the popular internet meme burst onto the scene in the 2010s. Several high-profile crypto projects have been made to honour the original dog, such as DOGE and the recently-exploding BONK. Generally, these cryptos are intended as light-hearted jokes, with the main utility being as a low-value tipping mechanism. However, Shiba Inu, the second-largest meme coin by market cap, has long been trying to shed its image as a function-less crypto. Its newest announcement – the addition of native domains – is yet another attempt to bring life to the Shiba Inu ecosystem.
.shib to Become First Web3 Ecosystem to Host its Own Domain
Shiba Inu announced yesterday that they plan to become the Web3 world’s first DeFi project to incorporate a native domain name. This is possible thanks to a partnership with internet domain firm D3, a company that aims to blend Web2 (the current internet) interoperability with Web3 projects and platforms.
The modern domain name system (DNS) allows websites to be hosted with suffixes like .com and .net, but common Web3 names like .eth or .crypto don’t work with most common servers. The inverse is true for Web3 tools like wallets or decentralised exchanges. The goal of combining the two allows for greater interoperability among projects – including things like having a .shib email address and sending crypto tokens to .shib domains.
The announcement isn’t finalised yet, as the .shib suffix must be vetted by the United State’s Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers – a non-profit that manages internet domains. But if it comes to fruition, it may spell a new era for the Shiba Inu ecosystem. At the very least, it demonstrates the project developer’s commitment to creativity and utility in the meme coin space – something you don’t exactly expect.
Much wow!
