  • SquareEnix, creators of the Final Fantasy franchise, are officially entering the GameFi space.
  • Their flagship project, Symbiogenesis, is set for release in December.
  • The game’s release will be preceded by a series of auctions over the next week and a half, accessible via a Discord server.

SquareEnix are one of the most prestigious names in gaming lore. The Japanese developers are responsible for a handful of the most popular gaming franchises of all time, in particular Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts. Yesterday the company announced they were embarking on a new voyage – one rich with NFTs and blockchain-based gaming. The team’s first venture will be called “Symbiogenesis”.

NFT Auction

Things will kick-start next week with an NFT auction hosted on the Ethereum and Polygon networks. The auction will take place in three waves, with the first beginning today (November 27), the second occurring on November 30 and everything else wrapping up between December 2-3.

The auction will be structured in a rather unique way. Rather than a traditional NFT airdrop or bidding process, access will only be granted to those who participate in a series of quests locked within a specific Discord server. There are to be 500 NFT characters on offer – and those who successfully complete the quests will receive first dibs on their character of choice. If multiple members on the “allowlist” (quest participants) want that same character, the NFT will then go to auction.

Symbiogenesis

Symbiogenesis is the game backing SquareEnix’s entry into the Web3 space. The game is expected to launch in December sometime and has been described as something in between a “digital collectible art project” and an RPG.

The game’s premise is relatively simple. Civilisation has relocated to a massive island in the sky, and there’s something threatening this utopia – A very angry dragon.

The extent of the actual gameplay is yet to be fully unveiled. It will largely revolve around solving clues to collect certain items and progress through the story. Participants will be able to complete main story missions, side quests and build up their list of characters to ultimately topple the dragon’s reign of terror.

SquareEnix entering the Web3 gaming community is a huge coup for the community. Although the potential for blockchain-based gaming is impressive, large developers are yet to truly take over the space and produce high-quality gaming titles. Outside of popular metaverses (which tend to be community-driven) and simple, yet successful games like Axie Infinity, there has yet to be a project quite the scale of Symbiogenesis in GameFi to date.

Its financial and cultural success will go a long way to accelerating the growth of blockchain gaming and interesting new, major game creators to join the fray.
