95,000 Scam Twitter Lists Led to $870,000 in Losses: Researchers

Researchers at San Diego State University have developed GiveawayScamHunter, an automated scam detection system that uncovered over 95,000 scam lists created on Twitter between June 2022 and June 2023. These lists, which can be created without permission and used for scams, have resulted in an estimated financial loss of $870,000 for over 365 victims. Despite reporting the results and account information to Twitter, nearly 44% of the spam accounts remained active at the time of the study.
