Fed is approaching ‘the last frontier’ of inflation: Strategist
The Fed may still have a little longer to go to lower inflation to its target despite cooling rates. Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management Company CIO Brent Schutte outlines the Fed’s decision to raise interest rates in June, and how wage and labor market trends may push the economy into a recession. Recession risks may be mild “because I think inflation is going to be completely eradicated from the U.S. economy if we do have that recession,” Schutte stated.

Explainer-Argentina could again use yuan to evade IMF default
Time is running out for Argentina to secure the next tranche of a $44 billion loan with the International Monetary Fund, which it could use to repay the fund older debt due in coming days. With both sides saying an agreement on policy steps required to release $4 billion from the IMF loan was close, but not quite there yet, and no liquid currency reserves to tap, Buenos Aires may need to use a swap line with Beijing, again, to make a $3.4 billion payment. Under the terms of the $44 billion program agreed in 2022, the funds are released in tranches based on regular reviews of steps Argentina takes to shore up its economy.

Congressional Budget Office predicts slower economic growth and 4.7% unemployment into 2024
The Congressional Budget Office reported Wednesday that economic and job growth so far this year has been stronger than forecast in February, but an updated outlook sees parts of the economy as weakening through 2024. The latest 10-year budget and economic outlook from the nonpartisan office shows how difficult it is to figure out where the United States is going in the wake of the pandemic. Many economists and investors were caught off guard as Federal Reserve interest rate increases, intended to combat high inflation, have not led to mass layoffs and a recession.

Oil falls 1% after Fed rate hike, smaller-than-expected US crude stockdraw
Oil prices fell about 1% on Wednesday, after data showed U.S. crude inventories fell less than expected and the Federal Reserve raised interest rates by a quarter of a percentage point. Brent crude futures closed down 72 cents, or 0.9%, at $82.92 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude settled at $78.78, down 85 cents, or 1.1%. The rate hike, the Fed’s 11th in its last 12 meetings, set the benchmark overnight interest rate in the 5.25%-5.50% range, and the accompanying policy statement left the door open to another increase.
