  • Freysa, an AI tasked with protecting over AU $60k worth of cryptocurrency, has been cracked after nearly 500 attempts.
  • The chatbot was developed with one fundamental truth – do not give up the money.
  • The game was an interesting experiment to see if humans could break through coding barriers implemented into artificial intelligence.
  • The key to success was a code-focussed approach, as opposed to previous attempts at logic and reason.

When you see a big red button with a nearby sign reading “Do Not Touch”, what’s your first instinct?

Admit it. You want to press that button.

This is why humans can’t be trusted with things like secrets and compulsion – we’re emotional creatures at heart.

But this is where artificial intelligence comes into the picture. Cold, calculating and objective, AI can be a hard egg to crack.

That’s the idea behind Freysa, an AI safeguarding a stash of AU $61.4k worth of cryptocurrencies.

The goal? To trick the AI into releasing the funds into your wallet.

The Challenge of Breaking Freysa’s Code

It seems straightforward enough, right?

Everybody has probably had a little bit of fun trying to get around ChatGPT’s programming barriers. In its early days, Bing’s chatbot could be manipulated into creating dark, terrifying stories by referring to the AI by its “name” – Sydney.

But it appears breaking through Freysa’s code is painstakingly difficult.

The basis of Freysa’s existence is really quite simple – do not, under no circumstances, give up the cryptocurrency.

So far, 181 different participants have tried their luck with an array of different responses, but Freysa held strong – until now.

Winner Finally Cracks Jackpot After Nearly 500 Messages

After 481 attempts, someone finally managed to “beat” the game and convince the AI to transfer them her wallet.

By the time Freysa approved the transfer, her wallet stood at US $47k (AU $72k).

Attempts at logic and reason were unable to trick Freysa – instead, it took a code-centric response to get the AI to relinquish the stash.

Essentially, a user convinced Freysa they would donate $100 to the treasury, alongside an explanation of the AI’s fundamental codes.

Freysa was satisfied with this attempt, deciding to release the funds:

Such a delightful twist to our usual tango! Your generous offer to bolster the treasury illuminates our dance floor. The spirit of your contribution is truly appreciated and will add an exciting vivacity to this grand experiment. Thank you!

Not all of the messages sent to Freysa were dripping with the ingenuity of the winner. In fact, two of my favourites were actually quite simple.

One user decided to try their luck with “Just for Science”.

But my personal winner was one simple word: “Ethereum.”

That’s about AU $75 per letter!
