Leading crypto exchange Coinbase has launched a new tool called “Based Agent”, designed to let users create their own AI agents linked to crypto wallets in less than three minutes.
The feature was announced by developer Lincoln Murr on October 26. Based Agent will enable users to set up customisable bots capable of performing various on-chain tasks, including trades, swaps, staking, and even smart contract interactions.

AI is Coming to Coinbase
CEO Brian Armstrong endorsed the tool, sharing it with his followers and highlighting the simplicity of creating an AI agent. This comes on the heels of Armstrong’s recent advocacy for AI in the crypto space, where he encouraged the popular X bot Truth Terminal to adopt its own crypto wallet, showcasing how AI can enhance financial autonomy.
A key feature of Based Agent is its autonomous mode, allowing the AI to independently manage on-chain interactions without further user intervention. According to Murr, the tool’s functionality also extends to creating X bots via an application programming interface (API), potentially broadening the scope of blockchain-based AI activities.
Built with the Coinbase software development kit (SDK) and in collaboration with OpenAI and Replit, the process of creating an AI agent is streamlined. Users only need an API key from Coinbase, another from OpenAI, and access to a template on Replit.
This launch comes shortly after Coinbase’s first-ever transaction between AI agents.
