Binance’s “CZ” Sparks Meme Coin Frenzy with Dog Name Reveal

By Ben Knight February 14, 2025 In Binance, DeFi, Memecoins
  • The memecoin hype may have died down since the end of 2024…but you can’t stop the crypto community from memeing when they get a chance.
  • In a X/Twitter exchange earlier in the week, Binance’s founder Changpeng Zhao revealed he owned an 18-month-old dog.
  • Trying to be the first onto the market, DeFi users started pumping out memecoins attempting to guess the name of CZ’s dog.
  • Unfortunately for them, the dog is named Broccoli, which not even the Oracle from The Matrix could’ve guessed.

Name a better duo than memecoins and dogs (pro tip: you can’t).

If you’re an influencer within the crypto community, and you dare release an image, or even the tiniest of details, about a fluffy puppy under your dominion… you better expect hundreds of new projects to hit the market.

That’s exactly what’s happened to Changpeng Zhao, the (in)famous founder of Binance.

After serving around four months in prison last year, CZ has kept a relatively low profile in 2025… until now.

And the furore that followed was legendary.

It’s easy to point at the crypto community’s pumping of memecoins based on nothing but memes and hype as a detractor from the industry’s legitimacy.

But in some ways, it’s also pretty endearing. It’s a microcosm of internet culture and the transition of society into a perpetually-online and connected web.

And once you find out what the name of CZ’s dog is, you’ll realise the uproar is even more justified.

It’s Broccoli.

That’s right, the founder of the world’s biggest crypto exchange has a dog named Broccoli.

Funnily enough, a few hours earlier CZ revealed he had a dog but didn’t give memers a name, picture or breed. So, the community went bonkers creating random dog-themed memecoins trying to hit the jackpot – making coins like Perry, Cleo and Brownie.

De Facto Memecoin Victor Emerges on Binance Chain

But soon enough, CZ unveiled the dog’s true name began with ‘B’ and was a Belgian Malinois, also known as a Belgian Sheepdog.

Not quite the pug that many had guessed.

Nevertheless, once the truth was out, the rush to create the Broccoli memecoin was on.

The winner — arbitrarily decided upon by traders — was built on Binance Chain (logically) and witnessed over US $280m (AU $443m) in trading volume within 12 hours.

As the story goes with memecoins, it went up to nearly US $0.40 (AU $0.63)… before plummeting to US $0.054 (AU $0.086).

Nevertheless, if you got in early enough, at the time of writing, you’d be up nearly 64,000%.

Hopefully this serves as a reminder to Eat. Your. Greens.
