After 11 Years, $30 Million Bitcoin Cache Awakens: 8 2012 Wallets Come Alive in July

A previously dormant Bitcoin address containing 1,037.42 BTC, worth $30 million, stirred to life for the first time since 2012 in the early hours of Saturday, July 22, 2023, precisely at 12:51 a.m. UTC.

Eight “sleeping” Bitcoin wallets, unused since 2012, started activity in July. This month, 1,216.92 BTC were moved after a decade of inactivity. Before the whale address moved 1,037.42 Bitcoins on Saturday, seven 2012 inactive wallet transactions totaled 179.50 BTC.

Since April 11, 2012, the 1,037.42 BTC recipient address has kept the coins. On the acquisition date, BTC traded at $4.84, valuing the hoard at $5,021. On July 22, block height 799,701 sent 1,037 BTC to this address. After this transaction, the owner injected 0.00000546 BTC into the wallet and transferred the balance, a little decreased 1,037.4189247 BTC.

Btcparser.com flagged and completed the original transaction. The transaction received a zero out of 100 privacy score from Blockchair.com. A “critical” privacy rating means the transfer has three major privacy issues. These issues include “matched addresses.” The “critical” grade means “identified issues are significantly endangering the privacy of the parties involved.”

The 1,216.92 BTC sent from 2012 dormant Bitcoin addresses this month included three 2011 transactions (1,2,3). Three 2011 transfers took place on July 20 and July 21. The three payments totaled only 25 BTC ($745K). Since 2010, no Bitcoin activity from dormant addresses has been reported. In June, three 2010 Bitcoin addresses (1,2,3) awoke, totaling 150 BTC ($4.4M).
