How to Setup a Bitcoin Account with CoinJar

Setting up an account with CoinJar is pretty easy, just follow the steps below to create your account and buy your first Bitcoins!

1. Creating your account

You can sign up using either a computer or a mobile device. If you’re on a computer use the web page, if you’re on a mobile device us the iOS or Android mobile app.

1. Go to the CoinJar web page or use the CoinJar mobile app (once you have the app downloaded).
2. Click “Sign Up”
3. Enter your name, email address and choose a password (at least 8 characters long)
4. Go to your email account and click “Confirm my account” (orange button in the email you received from CoinJar).
5. That’s it! – Your account is created and you are ready to verify your identity.

2. Verifying your account

You must verify your identity with CoinJar as part of government legislation. The instructions below are for verifying a personal account (if you’re verifying a company account the process is similar but instead of using the App to verify you will need to download some forms and send them to CoinJar).

1. Log into your CoinJar account and click “Get verified now”.
2. Select your account type. “Click Individual” if it’s your personal account.
3. Download the CoinJar app & sign in.
4. Verify your device by scanning the QR code with your phone camera.
5. Click “Get Started with your CoinJar account” and follow the verify identity instructions.
6. That’s it! – You should receive an email saying “Your CoinJar is fully verified”.

3. Linking your bank account

It is recommended to link your Australian bank account to CoinJar in order to withdraw your funds. This is how you do it:

1. Log into your CoinJar account and click “Add bank account”.
2. Add your bank account name, BSB and Account number.
3. Wait 1-2 business days and check your bank account for 2 small verification deposits.
4. Go back to your CoinJar account and click “Verify now” under Linked Bank Accounts.
5. Enter the small verification deposits (for example 0.09 and 0.14) and click Verify.
6. That’s it! – Your bank account is linked (and should show as verified in green text).

4. Depositing funds

Before you can buy Bitcoin you must deposit some funds into your CoinJar account. You can deposit into your CoinJar using the three supported payment methods, PayID, BPAY and Blueshyft. Below is how to deposit using BPAY.

1. Log into your CoinJar account and click “Quick deposit”.
2. Select BPAY and note the Biller Code and Reference number.
3. Go to your bank account and pay using BPAY (same way you would pay a utility bill). The Australian dollar amount is totally up to you (minimum $10 and maximum $10,000). The bank statement will say “Payment Technologies”.
4. Wait 1-3 business days and your funds should be in your CoinJar. You will get an email when your funds are available.
5. That’s it! – You’re now ready to buy some Bitcoins.

5. Buying Bitcoin

To buy your Bitcoin follow the steps below.

1. Log into your CoinJar account and click “Payments”.
2. Click Transfer
3. In the ‘From’ dropdown, select “Cash Account”. And in the ‘To’ dropdown, select “Everyday Bitcoin”.
4. Type in the amount of Bitcoin you wish to buy (you can switch to BTC value if you prefer).
5. Click Review and confirm
6. Check all the information is correct, then click Pay now.
7. Congratulations! – You now own some Bitcoins.

6. Sending Bitcoin

Once you’ve bought some Bitcoin, you may wish to send it to someone, or to another trading account. This process can be a bit tricky so if you’re a beginner you may want to do some research beforehand or get some help from someone who is familiar with the process.

1. Log into your CoinJar account and click “Payments”.
2. Click on the Send tab (it might be already selected as its the first tab)
3. Select From: “Everyday Bitcoin”, Enter the BTC blockchain public address of the Bitcoin recipient (make sure to double check the address, ensuring it is correct and that it is a BTC address, not the address of another coin).
4. Enter the amount in BTC (if you’re unsure how much that is in AUD you can use the Bitcoin price calculator).
5. Click Review and confirm
6. Check all the information is correct, then click Pay now.
7. That’s it! – Your BTC is sent. You can find the blockchain transaction ID (TXID) under your “Everyday Bitcoin” account transactions. You can copy & paste this into a BTC blockchain explorer to see it’s status.

7. Withdrawing funds

Withdrawing funds back to your bank account is similar process to buying Bitcoin.

1. Log into your CoinJar account and click “Payments”.
2. Click Transfer
3. In the ‘From’ dropdown, select “Cash Account” or “Everyday Bitcoin” and in the ‘To’ dropdown, select your Bank Account.
4. Type in the amount of AUD you wish to transfer.
5. Click Review and confirm
6. Check all the information is correct, then click Pay now.
7. That’s it! – You should receive your funds within 1-3 business days.
